Seth Gabel previews “Novation” and the return of ‘Fringe’s'…shape-shifters with the Examiner

They’re ba-ack!

Now that Peter (Joshua Jackson) has returned to Fringe, even if not to his rightful place as son of Walter (John Noble) and boyfriend to Olivia (Anna Torv), the focus is shifting for this “new” universe’s Fringe Division. With the mysterious man claiming to know all of them– and very clearly knowing a lot about what they do– being held for observation, attention might be divided at the worst possible time. Because whileFringe fans were on the edge of their seats awaiting Peter’s return, something else was slipping under the radar. And now they are wreaking their own havoc once again, but this is only the beginning.

Yes, that’s right, “Novation” will see the return of the human shape-shifter in a case that may just be able to benefit from Peter’s own special brand of knowledge but will also hit a bit too close to home for a number of the Fringe Division’s team members and colleagues, including Lincoln Lee (Seth Gabel), who lost his own partner to a similar case earlier this season.

“The whole shape-shifter thing obviously hits a nerve for [Lincoln] because that always relates to the death and his involvement in this crazy universe. Something I’ve been trying to keep track of is that week-to-week we always deal with these really high stakes sci-fi cases that are just crazy! Take a real person, but them in this scenario, it takes them a long time to get used to that. So I’m trying to make sure that I don’t get desensitized too quickly because it’s easy to be like ‘Okay, we’re solving this case; we’re solving that case now.’ And I think Lincoln kind of goes through the same process where he’s like ‘Oh, I’m treating this like it’s normal, but we’re dealing with, like, who’s that bald guy with the cap observing us? What is going on!? It’s hard not to get kind of lost in that, forget your place, and I think we realize that. The anxiety comes back week to week. Every case shows him ‘My life is dead.’ The death of his partner represents his old life being dead,” Gabel previewed.

Fringe airs on Friday nights at 9pm, only on FOX. “Novation” airs on October 28th 2011.*
